Frequently Asked Questions
Will a hearing aid restore my hearing to normal?
While hearing aids can’t fully restore normal hearing, they can help immensely. About 9 out of 10 hearing aid users report an improved quality of life.
Is a hearing test painful?
Not at all. A hearing test is painless and easy. It’s important to detect a loss as soon as possible as this can help minimize further hearing loss.
Who is qualified to conduct a hearing evaluation?
All of these professions are uniquely qualified to identify and treat your hearing loss.
-
Physicians are rigorously trained to identify and treat medical conditions involving the ear. If an ear problem requires medication or surgery a physician is the appropriate professional to manage this situation.
-
Audiologists are also trained to identify ear problems. They have advanced degrees from academic institutions and are experts in the non-medical management of hearing loss. This typically involves the selection, programming, and fitting of hearing aids.
How does a hearing aid work?
The microphone in the aid picks up the sound in the environment and changes it to electrical energy that goes to a set of amplifiers and other modifying and adjusting circuits. The modified electrical signal is then sent to a miniature speaker (called a receiver) and delivered to the ear. The newest aids are smart enough to amplify certain sounds or frequencies that are tailored to each hearing loss.
Do I need two hearing aids?
This should be determined by the audiologist. For most people with hearing loss, binaural amplification (two aids) offers substantial improvement, in both quiet and in noise, along with a better sense of direction or localization as to the sound source.
What is the "best" hearing aid on the market?
The simplest answer to this question is: The one that fits, feels, and works best for you.
There are a variety of factors you and your audiologist will discuss that help determine the exact model and programming that works best. In the end, you’ll have a hearing instrument that’s been created just for you to address your specific needs. Some of the factors determining which hearing aid is right for you include: your type of hearing loss, your lifestyle, comfort level, and price. These are just some of the reasons Larnaca Audiology Center offers over 30 different styles of hearing aids.
My friend didn’t have a positive experience with hearing aids. Will the same happen to me?
