Hearing Protection

Loud noise is dangerous and the impact it can have on a person’s hearing is permanent and irreversible. Exposing your ears to high level noise, i.e. the noise levels of industrial equipment, hunting, or clay shooting damages the inner ear, even if experienced for just 15 minutes. Once the microscopic hair cells of the inner ear are destroyed they do not grow back.

The end result is permanent hearing loss and/or a highly frustrating ringing in the ears (tinnitus). In addition to reduced hearing capability, the consequences of exposure to noise include: stress and nervousness; reduced concentration and quality of sleep; degraded performance and productivity; increased risk of workplace accidents; difficulty to communicate; feeling of isolation; increased medical expenses.

 Hearing protection devices (HPDs)

Hearing protection devices refers to devices and systems that protect hearing from dangerously loud noise. There are both static ('passive') and level-dependent dynamic ('active') hearing protection systems are available.

The so-called ‘passive’ hearing protection devices provide a constant, unchanging level of sound dampening (‘attenuation’). The so-called ‘active’ hearing protection devices provide electronic level-dependent protection. In other words, when an active system’s built-in miniature microphones detect noise levels reaching dangerous levels - including very short ‘impulse’ noises such as gun shots these sounds are instantaneously dampened to a comfortable, safe level. At the same time, active systems can amplify quieter sounds to give the user a full environmental awareness and allow normal conversation without the user having to take off their protection (which risks hearing damage if sudden loud noises then occur).

ACTIVE Hearing Protection Devices available at Larnaca Audiology Center

CENS digital 1 & 2

Not so long ago, wearing ear protection meant accepting that you would have to shoot while insulated from the sounds that are often the first clues to your target's motion. Fortunately, there is now a solution that can reduce the noise of a gunshot to no more than a dull thud, but which still allows you to hear even the quietest of sounds around you. In fact - quite incredibly - CENS Digital protection can actually enhance your perception of ambient audio significantly. CENS Digital is a truly superb solution for the serious shooting enthusiast and Larnaca Audiology Center is proud to be an approved agent for these products, authorized to carry out the fitting procedure that allows a precise match of the inserts to  your ears.

CENS Digital is available in two variants: CENS 1 and CENS 2.

CENS 1 provides all-round shooting noise suppression

CENS 2 allows the user to switch between protection optimized for a shooting ground environment and a 'game shooting' setting that delivers superb sensitivity to ambient sounds between gunshots.

CENS Flex 1 & 2

CENS Flex is, like CENS Digital, an individually-fitted ear plug design that uses electronics to allow, or even amplify, low-level sounds whilst completely neutralizing any potential noise threats. What CENS Flex adds is the use of an ultra-soft silicone rubber molding in place of the acrylic, to deliver a superb level of comfort even over many hours use. CENS Flex also has the benefit of a new wind and rain guard over the microphone and comes with a passive insert that can be useful for trap shooters. Larnaca Audiology Center has the training and experti se to ensure that your fitting session is carried out properly and can advise you on the options available.

A CENS Flex 1 system uses a compromise setting that protects both clay and game shooters. A CENS Flex 2 system, incorporates a push-button allowing users to choose between the fast return to high sensitivity that is optimum when shooting game  or the delayed return and regular sensitivity that gives best protection to target shooters.

CENS Hunter

The latest addition to the CENS range is CENS Hunter, with volume controls and program settings specifically designed for the rifle shooter. A three-position switch allows the electronic circuitry to be switched off, set to a normal volume (green dot position), or set to provide a very high level of amplification that can make even the slightest of sounds clearly audible (red dot position). A rotary volume control allows further adjustment within the two ranges. The separate program selection button allows the user to choose how the electronics react to nearby audio threats, with P1 a general purpose setting well-suited to protecting against the incessant, high-level noise of a shooting range. The P2 program offers a modified response more suited to hunting, protecting against occasional gunshots and wind noise but also allowing the user to enjoy a significantly increased awareness of his or her environment at other times. Every CENS Hunter system is supplied with a pair of CENS windshields and other accessories.

CENS proflex 1 & 2

CENS ProFlex is the latest version of the CENS system, featuring a new design and materials that make them easy to clean and maintain but even more comfortable in the ear. All of the proven CENS benefits are preserved, so CENS ProFlex users will enjoy superb hearing protection but hear every detail of the ambient sound around them. In fact, your natural hearing can be enhanced remarkably by wearing CENS Proflex, with little or no loss of directional information - so not only is it easier to detect the click of a trap releasing or the flap of a game bird on the wing, you will also know which direction that sound is coming from. Proflex Digital One has a single audio processing program designed for good all-round performance. ProFlex Digital Two, has two switchable settings with one optimized for clay shooting and the other for game.
